Brahms’ late work combines one of his characteristically beautiful slow movements with music with more than a tinge of gypsy style in a piece full of autumnal serenity and muscular vigour. Beethoven’s trio is actually an arrangement of his own large-scale septet, but the reduction in forces seems only to reinforce the work’s dark-hued colouration, lyrical inspiration and fizzing energy.
